By The Athlete's Foot Australia | August 8, 2016

On average, Australians spend 7.6 hours per day on their feet while some professions spend over 10 hours per day standing up1. We selected some hard working shift workers to test and review the Ascent Diamond Grip range and let us know how they stood up to long gruelling days on their feet.

What’s your day to day like?

My day begins long before the restaurant opens, I’m usually there first thing in the morning preparing for service. Once the restaurant opens my role in the kitchen is crucial, as one missing element risks the whole dish. I can spend over 16 hours on my feet and when we are busy there isn’t a spare second to sit down.

How did you find the shoes?

As soon as I put the shoes on they were comfortable, I didn’t need to break them in at all. I really liked the Diamond Grip tread as it is so important to be safe in the kitchen. The best thing about the shoes was that after 16 hours on my feet I didn’t need to soak my feet after my shift.

Average Shift length: 12 hours

What’s your day to day like?

I care for all patients that come in for surgery, I’m with them from the moment they are admitted until they have finished their procedure. A lot goes into preparing the patient, checking and double checking details, anticipating any issues that may arise and most importantly ensuring that the patient is safe and well cared for during their procedures. I am on my feet for a lot of the day as I run around to different areas of the hospital meeting patients, collecting equipment or assisting my colleagues, it’s the exact opposite to a desk job.

How did you find the shoes?

Wearing the Ascent shoes, my feet are well looked after and I felt comfortable whilst working. They protect my feet from fluids and objects that may be accidentally dropped on my feet and equally as important, they look professional and clean. Knowing that I am comfortable and protected, I can run around through a busy shift without any pain or discomfort, ensuring that I can keep going in a very busy environment.

Daniel

Name: Daniel
Occupation: Waiter
Average Shift length: 10 hours
Shoes Tested: Ascent Zest

What’s your day to day like?

Working in a busy restaurant we can do over 100 covers per night, this means I am constantly going from the kitchen to the tables and back again. From the moment I start my shift and am briefed on the menu for the night to the end of my shift when I clear the tables I am always ‘on’.

How did you find the shoes?

The shoes were really good, I like that they look professional and could double as ‘dress’ shoes. The non-slip sole was fantastic, there is nothing worse than slipping over when you are carrying food or drinks. In the Ascent Zest I was always confident my next step would be solid.

Name: Duncan
Occupation: Chef
Average Shift length: 16 hours
Shoes Tested: Ascent Zest

What’s your day to day like?

Most days I oversee the kitchen staff, I monitor all of the orders and food costs. It can get very busy during service and I expedite the pass and ensure that food gets to the customers at the right time and at top quality. Being at the front of the team and controlling the flow of a busy service makes for interesting work.

How did you find the shoes?

The shoes were really nice to work in, I had no problem jumping straight into them and getting to work unlike some chef shoes that need ‘wearing in’. The shoes have been great as it is very important for me to be comfortable, if I am not it can throw off my rhythm and affect service.

Nurse

Name: Katie
Occupation: Nurse
Average Shift length: 10-12 hours
Shoes Tested: Ascent Eternity 2

What’s your day to day like?

I spend the majority of my day working on my feet running between patient rooms and the treatment room. I look after patients and make sure their needs are taken care of.

How did you find the shoes?

The shoes look professional and I find them supportive. As a person with high arches it is hard to find shoes that provide enough support for my feet but these shoes did. The non-slip sole is really great when I’m assisting patients to shower, it was great to know I was safe from slipping over. I selected the open top shoe but there is a slight risk in the ward of a sharps injury if something is dropped. I will make sure to choose one of the closed in options from the range for my next pair.

Kelvin

Occupation: Waiter
Average Shift length: 10 hours
Shoes Tested: Ascent Zest

What’s your day to day like?

When I’m working, I’m running around constantly, back and forth from the kitchen to the tables trying to provide the best service for customers, I try to enhance their dining experience.

How did you find the shoes?

The shoes are really comfortable, they have great cushioning and grip and I have really enjoyed wearing them. When I work long hours there is a lot of strain on my feet, if I am comfortable I am able to perform better and remain focussed on the customer and ensure they have a positive experience.
