Easy School Day Snacks
To many parents' relief, after countless months of kids’ doing school from home, it’s finally time to welcome the kids’ back to school! However, with back to school comes a whole set of responsibilities we have foregone for quite some time, such as lunch preparation! Don’t stress—we have you covered with some easy school day snacks for the lockdown lunchbox!
An Apple A Day Keeps The Doctor Away
We have all heard this saying! Fruit is an excellent source of vitamins and minerals, and a perfect snack to give your child. Apples often brown quickly, so a good trick to keep them fresh for longer (and save time by bulking up the preparation) is to soak the apple slices in salt water for 5 minutes, and store in an air-tight container for 2-3 days.
Some other honourable fruit mentions include bananas, which are perfect for writing a cute message in the banana peel to brighten your child’s day! Or, if you like variety, fruit skewers are a good way to make eating fruit a bit more fun.
Carrot and Celery Sticks
This snack option is a great way to get the kids to eat their veggies in a tasty way. Plus, they are very easy to prepare and can be stored for 5+ days, making the back to school week a breeze. We recommend chopping the carrots into your desired snack-size sticks, and storing in a glass jar filled with water and pop it in the fridge. Change the water out daily. For celery sticks, chop them up and wrap them tightly in aluminium foil and store in the fridge for freshness that can last 1-2 weeks! For added tastiness, add in a small tub of hummus dip for your child to enjoy.
The OG. The Classic. The Sandwich.
One of the easiest lunch options and a generational favourite, is the good old sandwich. Sandwiches are never boring, and can be easily switched up with your child’s favourite toppings. You can’t go wrong with the Aussie classic Vegemite or peanut butter sandwich, but some other favourites include ham and cheese, chicken and lettuce, or swap the traditional sandwich slices for a bread roll or a wrap!
To keep things interesting, a fun way to prepare the sandwich is to use stamps to cut the bread into shapes. You could make a unicorn sandwich, a heart sandwich, a puzzle sandwich…the options are endless! For the time poor - triangle cuts are the way to go (never squares).
Hard Boiled Egg
A great snack treat that is easy-peasy to make for back to school week are hard-boiled eggs. A great source of protein, and easy for your child to snack on during the day. You can serve as is, and let your child rip into it when they get to school, or slice it up and serve with some hummus, or avocado on a slice of bread. Another option is to make egg-dip with your hard boiled eggs by adding a sprinkle of curry powder, some mayonnaise and mixing it all together. Add into a sandwich with some salad for a nutritious and filling lunch.
Back to school never looked so easy! Which snack staple will you try?
