Feet at Work
Feet bear the brunt of the daily working life. Prolonged standing, badly fitting footwear, slippery surfaces and falling objects are just some of the dangers we expose our feet to in the workplace.
Any work that involves walking or standing for long periods of time is hard on your feet. Most foot injuries occur in workers involved in manufacturing, construction, transport and healthcare, and range from cuts, bruises and sprains from falling objects, and trips and falls, through to overuse injuries such as sprains and stress fractures.
RISK FACTORS
HARD SURFACES
Hard surfaces such as concrete lack flexibility and multiply ground force with every step. If you spend long hours standing on hard surfaces, you could benefit from cushioned soles for shock absorption.
POORLY FITTED FOOTWEAR
Blisters, calluses and corns are your feet’s way of telling you that your shoes don’t fit properly or that they’re too small – or even too big. Comfortable, properly fitted footwear is essential to maintaining good foot health.
WRONG FOOTWEAR
Arch pain or pain in the ball of the foot or heel may be related to muscle strain, which is associated with poor foot posture. Shoes that are properly fitted with comfortable inners, lower heels and good arch support are recommended to reduce discomfort and prevent injury.
SLIPPERY SURFACES
Slip-resistant shoes can reduce the risk of occupational slips and falls.
