PE Shoes Buying Guide

PE should be one of the most enjoyable parts of your child’s school day. Finding the right PE shoes can be the difference between a fun afternoon of kickball or a trip to the nurse’s office.

There are a few ways to make sure that your little one’s feet are comfortable and well supported for all the running, jumping, kicking and crawling that are part of every school day.

It’s amazing how quickly kids grow, and their feet are no exception. When shopping for kid’s shoes it’s important to find a mix of stability and comfort, with a little bit of extra room to grow.

There are different thinks to consider when buying PE sneakers compared to the usual kid’s school shoes. In our buying guide we’ll do our best to outline all of the things that can be done to ensure that the shoes you take home for your child will not only last the distance but provide the support that little growing feet need.

Proper Fit and Comfort

The general rule of thumb is to ensure that there is a nice snug fit around the midfoot and heel, with enough room in toe box for feet to grow into. Cushion and support are also important to protect growing joints and muscles during active PE classes.

Shoes that are too tight may cause rubbing and blisters, while shoes that are too loose can may lead to rolled ankles, slips and falls. Our best advice is to speak to the knowledgeable  team members at an Athlete’s Foot store to help you find that sweet spot of comfort, stability and space to grow.

While support and cushioning are usually the buzz words when it comes to kid’s sneakers, it’s also important to have some flexibility. Sneakers that are too stiff can restrict the natural movement of your child’s feet, which may lead to discomfort. Sneakers like the New Balance Arishi and Asics Gel-Kayano are flexible, with a mesh upper for that all-important breathability.

Little Feet Need to Breathe

PE sessions can get sweaty on those hot and humid days, so add breathability to your PE shoes must-have checklist. Shoes with mesh panels and natural, breathable materials will help keep your child’s feet cool and dry.

To keep your kid’s feet dry and help with breathability, it’s also important to find a quality pair of socks. The Athlete’s foot has a great selection of kid’s socks with natural cotton blend that helps keep feet dry and fresh.

Make Sure They Love Their New PE Sneakers

While making sure there is room for growth with adequate support and cushioning, the child’s taste in shoes also needs to come into consideration.

Kids are more likely to wear PE shoes that they like, so make sure to involve them in the shopping process to ensure that the new sneakers you bring home are something they’ll be excited to wear.

We hope that our buying guide has given some food for thought when it comes to your next PE shoes shopping trip.
