Trail Running with Your Dog
Is it ok to take my dog on long runs?
Before you get started hitting the trail with your dog it is important to consult your vet to see if your dog's health has the ability to endure long runs. Your vet will firstly consider if your dog needs any specific vaccinations/medications before you get started. There are different considerations when trail running with your dog compared to urban running, such as ticks or fleas, as well as lake water found in some trail areas. Your vet will also ensure your pet is physically capable and trail-ready. They will consider the age of your dog, as younger pups’ bones are still developing, and may suggest to wait until they are fully formed and strengthened. How far can I run safely with your dog?
To help determine how far you can run safely with your dog, they will note the breed of your dog, as they understand certain breeds are more physical/athletic than others. With the right training and conditioning, your dog could run on average up to 8-13Kms, up to 3-4 times a week. As a general guideline, aim for shorter runs, roughly 2-5Kms, then gradually increase the distance as your dog’s fitness improves. Over time, more athletic and conditioned breeds can run up to 25-30 KMs, up to 5-6 times a week. If you and your dog currently partake in road running together, it is important to consider that trail running can have increased intensity, and requires different muscles, just like in humans.
Is running with your dog good exercise?
Running with your dog provides a multitude of health benefits for both you and your running companion. Regular exercise is crucial for a healthy and balanced lifestyle. Trail running engages various muscle groups, enhances endurance, and assists with joint flexibility for both you and your dog. There is also the benefit of mental stimulation which allows your dog to burn off pent-up energy and reduces behavioural issues.
What are some potential hazards to look out for when trail running with your dog?
It is your responsibility to keep your dog safe when taking them out on a run. Be sure to not overdo it and be wary of potentially dangerous wildlife and plants that could seriously injure your dog. Be sure to track your dog’s behaviour while your run together. If your dog attempts to stop and lay down in shady spots be sure to stop running and carry your friend home, as fatigue is the first sign of heat stroke. What do I need to trail run with my dog?
