Guide to the different types of running

From tempo to interval and even training – there’s so much running terminology out there – it can be hard to keep up (excuse the pun). Whether you’re just getting started, or you’re a pro who is trying to understand what the latest running trend is about – check out our guide to some of the various types of runs – and even better, we have found the perfect shoes to match.

The different types of running styles we are going to cover are:

·         Recovery Runs

·         Interval

·         Tempo

·         Fartlek

·         Long Distance Runs

·         Hill Sprints

Recovery Runs

Post big workout or hard run – a recovery run is an important mechanism for your running schedule. These runs should usually be taken at a low intensity- think running under 65% of your maximum heart rate. This is your taking it easy run, helping you achieve your fitness goals in a safe and achievable manner.

Running Shoes for Recovery Runs

It’s worth opting for a comfortable, bouncy ride for recovery runs, to help keep your legs feeling fresh. The Brooks Glycerin 21 is a true versatile running shoe  – boasting an extra 2mm of ultra-plush, nitrogen-infused DNA Loft v3 and a broad platform that allows the Brooks Glycerin 21 to achieve an ultra-plush ride with smooth transitions that absorb the impact of running

Interval Runs

Interval runs are an excellent option for beginners or for people new to running, as they involve short intense bursts of running followed by an immediate recovery period, then another short burst of running.

An example might be running for 1 minute, then walking for 1 minute – which is then repeated. Interval runs offer a great gateway and can be done on both road and treadmill to great effect.

For interval runs, think responsiveness and cushioned transitions to help you adapt to the two different paces. These sneakers can also potentially work well for long distance running too. Our pick for Interval Running shoes is a pair of Brooks Ghost 16 – the extra plush support, lightweight and distraction free comfort, plus durability – it’s your perfect running sidekick.

Tempo Runs

A tempo run is a structured speed run – post warm up, think running as fast as you can in between and closing it off with a recovery run. In an ideal state, the speed run (also known as ‘tempo zone’) you should be running fast enough that you are almost running outside of your regular comfort zone.

When you’re a tempo runner, look for supportive footwear that is ultra lightweight but also durable. Flexibility is also key as you shift into a higher gear during your speed moments. We can’t get enough of the New Balance FuelCell range for its all-round versatility. An icon for tempo, the ever-evolving FuelCell midsole made from 20% Pebax mixed with CO2/N EVA delivers a propulsive feel to drive you forward. Fartlek Runs

Derived from Swedish origins, and meaning ‘speed play’ – and combines a mix of interval and tempo together – but slightly less structure. It’s an amalgamation of tempo and interval runs. It’s essentially a continuous run that mixes periods of fast and moderate speeds. Similar to an interval run, except you’re focusing more on a full run as opposed to the immediateness of tempo runs. It’s an excellent method for marathon and distance training.

Long Runs

Not just for distance runners – but generally a ‘long run’ literally refers to the longest run on your weekly run schedule. For example if you’re in the last weeks before a half marathon, your long run might be your 15K

Long runs, when undertaken in a regular training schedule can support endurance and all round fitness.

Running Shoes for Long Distance

Those who partake in long runs might want to consider reaching for a pair of shoes that has extra cushioning. With ‘cloudlike softness’ the Asics Gel Nimbus 26 provides runners with both high levels of cushioning as well as stability for those longer runs. The mesh upper also offers breathability adding to the lightweight look and feel. It’s available for both men and women in a huge range of colours, widths and sizes so there’s an option for everyone.

Hill Sprints

This is a repetitive workout aiming at tackling an uphill run, rep after rep. Brilliant for working out your legs – if you’re living somewhere with no hills (city dwellers, we’re looking at you), a treadmill is a great solution to practicing your hill repeats. It’s also a great addition to your workouts if you’re looking for some versatility in your running schedule.

Sneakers for Hill Sprints

Think cushioning first and foremost – we highly recommend considering a sneaker that has slight elevation, so there’s less pressure underfoot as you’re running downhill. Asics Gel Kayano 31 offers Asics’ most innovative support tech to date. Expect adaptive and holistic stability, combined with maximum cushioning to ensure full protection. Shop an epic range of colour options for both men and women across our Asics Gel Kayano 31 collection.
