What Is a Good Marathon Time?

Its common as runners to constantly be chasing more and more. A new personal record, a longer distance or a more challenging marathon route. There are multiple factors that may affect your marathon finishing time with some factors being easy to menouver and some being out of your control. Learning to manage and alter things you can control is one of the most important things when it comes to being a steadfast marathon runner. When race day comes along, remembering that things such as weather are subject to change and may alter your time is something to consider to stay positive and hopeful that you’ll reach your goal.

If you're an experienced marathon runner you'll most likely have more ambitious goals. Finishing time may be your number one priority on a marathon but if you're a beginner, remember to be realistic with your time. It might take you a bit longer in comparison to a seasoned pro and there's nothing wrong with that.

The weather of course, can be very unpredictable on race day. If the marathon day is high temperature, it may take a bit longer to complete as you would slow down your pace. In contrast, if race day is cold, the weather may cause your muscles to tighten, and it may be more difficult to complete.

The type of terrain you'll face on a marathon run is never going to be 100% accurate. The surfaces you will run on may be altered and your pace may be affected so remember to consider this and remember, it may be something out of your control.

What is the average marathon time?

So, you may be asking, what is the average time a marathon should take? This does differ between males and females, fitness levels and age. All of these factors should also be taken into consideration when working out the average time. Majority of age groups can finish a marathon in around 4 and a half hours. Studies have shown that women’s average time in marathons is around 4 hours and 50 minutes and 4 hours and 30 minutes for men.

What’s the average pace for marathon runners?

Studies have shown that male runners normally run about 1Km in around 6minutes and 43 seconds and 7minutes and 26 seconds per KM for female marathon runners.

Tips for reaching your time goal:

  1. Build your muscles and stamina: Preparing your body for a marathon is super important and can aid in decreasing your time and bettering your pace (if that is your end goal). Eating well, staying hydrated and keeping a strong upper body can decrease fatigue.
  2. Develop a training plan and schedule: Stay consistent with a training schedule can assist with focusing on your particular needs. With consistency, you’ll be able to prepare for your stamina, have proper running form and control your breathing.
  3. Track all progress: Tracking your progress can be a great motivator and allow you to keep stiving for your goals.

So, grab your running shoes, your friends and get started on training for that marathon you’ve always wanted to run. Don’t forget to stock up on quality socks and recovery equipment for during and after your marathon.
